Plot: Helen was born a normal child and was a happy baby. In her early childhood she got very sick. The doctor could do nothing to help her. She came down with scarlet fever. This, of course, was one hundred years ago. They didn’t give much hope of her recovery Helen’s parents’ refused to give up. They went to other doctors for help.
Slowly, Helen got worse and was no longer able to speak. She was dumb, Because people couldn’t understand her. She began to make signs and gestures. As she grew older. She began to learn about everything by feelings. Because of Helen’s condition, her parents wanted to send her away, to an insane asylum. They wanted to wait a bit longer to see if she could improve. Then one day her mother read about a special school in Boston. It was a school of the blind with only hope on his side, Helen’s father wrote a letter to the school.
One day, Annie Sullivan, a woman from the school for the blind, began teaching Helen how to spell by spelling words on the palm of her hands. As time passed with Helen and Annie, Helen began to learn more the world around her and was eager to learn all she could. Everywhere she went she wanted to learn. At the circus she learned about animals and Christmas. In 1888 she was also beginning to read Braille. At the age of eight, Helen went to another school to learn how to use her mouth for speaking.
When she was twelve years old she was invited to the White House to meet the President of the Unites States. For the next six years, Helen prepared herself for college; In 1990 Helen entered Radcliffe College. In 1904 she graduated, with honors. She traveled after college giving speeches on the problem of the blind and deaf. Soon she stopped traveling and retired at home until she died at the age of eighty – seven. Her sprit lives on.
